ReClaim – Urban Gamification for City Reappropriations

ReClaim is a EU-funded research project aiming to understand how play and games can change our way understanding city spaces and improve citizens’ lives.

Play has always had its place in the city. From simple games like “don’t walk on the pavement lines” to location based games such as Pokémon Go or playful manifestations like flash-mobs, many playful practices use the urban spaces as their playground.

Today, however, city-play is acquiring a new, important dimension: it is seen as an antidote to the anonymity of the urban environments, capable of counteracting the feeling of powerlessness and disconnection that their inhabitants increasingly feel towards them.

*Playfulness is a powerful thing*: ReClaim aims to study how citizens can use it to reappropriate their street, their neighborhood, their city.
