T5 Mobile User-Interface Design for Work, Home, Play, and On the Way

Aaron Marcus
Aaron Marcus and Associates, USA

Mobile user interfaces (UIs) enable users at  work, home, play, or on the way, to use ubiquitous products/services that combine complex functions, e.g., of phone, photo, organizer, audio, and Internet access. Mobile UIs offer challenges, but also brandable innovation opportunities for new metaphors, mental models, navigation, interaction, and appearance. Mobile UI developers must discover techniques to make mobile products/services easier to learn, as well as more usable, useful, and appealing to ever wider, more diverse, and more demanding users. This tutorial tours key product/service offerings, explains primary UI development principles and techniques of practice, and introduces next-generation issues. Special attention is given to information design/visualization, culture, vehicle UIs, wrist-top devices, and music metadata management. Successful mobile UIs enable users to make smarter decisions faster as users find, sort, play, and pay for what mobile products/services enable.
