T6 Cross-Cultural User-Interface Design

Aaron Marcus
Aaron Marcus and Associates, USA

User interfaces (UI) of Web, mobile, and desktop products/services must achieve successful communication globally with diverse users. Culture affects usability, usefulness, and appeal of application/content UIs across all platforms and markets, whether in entertainment, travel, health, finance, education, or government. UI researchers, analysts, designers, evaluators, documenters, and implementers must learn how to incorporate culture models into the development process and how culture dimensions explain the effects of culture on metaphors, mental models, navigation, interaction, and appearance. This tutorial explains cultural models, details Hofstede's model, shows how UIs differ by culture, details the effects of culture on global corporate Websites, describes a best-of-breed set of culture dimensions, and provides a basis for developing culture-sensitive development tools and content-management systems. The end result is more successful products/services that are more acceptable, preferable, and delightful because they relate well to the end-user's culture expressed through symbols, heroes/heroines, rituals, and values.
