Student volunteers

Being a student volunteer is a great way for young researchers to get familiar with the current trends in the research and development related to haptic human-computer interaction. In addition, you can establish a network with the most relevant professionals and other students in the field.

We are looking for a group of 20 enthusiastic and reliable students who want to help us run a successful conference in a collaborative spirit. Good student volunteers are an integral part of any conference and their work is truly valued by both the organizers and attendees.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BEING A STUDENT VOLUNTEER?

By helping in the practical organization and running of the conference, student volunteers are a salient part in creating an enjoyable conference experience. Student volunteers support the various programs and events hosted at the conference: registration and information desk, helping in panels, paper sessions and workshops, helping with preparation and set-up of equipment when needed, and in general answering people’s questions about practical matters at the venue. Volunteers are expected to work a certain amount of time during the conference but will also be given great opportunities to attend the conference sessions and socialize.

No special skills or experience are necessary for most volunteer positions.

BENEFITS OF BEING A STUDENT VOLUNTEER

In return for their help at the conference, you as a student volunteer will receive:
  • free conference registration
  • conference proceedings
  • one free meal per day
  • tickets to get together –party, Tampere city reception, and Conference Dinner
  • an awesome After Party for SVs at the end of the last conference day
  • student volunteer T-shirt
  • free accommodation in a local hostel (Mon 11th – Sat 16th)
Most importantly, you will get the opportunity to exchange ideas with students with similar interests from all over the world, as well as a chance to network with professionals in a relaxed environment during the conference's social events. You will be part of the conference organization team and get to work closely with a group of people that share your interests. You might also have a chance to attend one workshop during your spare time, assuming they are not fully booked.

Please be aware that student volunteers are responsible for their travelling expenses to and from Tampere.

REQUIREMENTS

We are expecting you to have a positive and enthusiastic “can-do” attitude as well as some flexibility and creativity in taking care of practical matters. Usually some interesting surprises occur in such events, which therefore require instant handling. Naturally, you should show up to given tasks on time. Finally, we expect you to be a helpful smiling interface to the conference attendees – both on duty or off.

We expect every volunteer to commit to a total of about 20 volunteer hours of work at the conference (over 4-5 days). You should preferably arrive the day before the conference begins (Mon June 11th) and stay a few hours after the conference ends (Fri 15th). There will be an orientation to being a SV on Monday, after which some practical preparations have to be taken care of. Attending the orientation is highly recommended! Any hours worked during these periods will count towards the 20-hour total.

You should have good communicative skills in English. Some knowledge of Finnish is appreciated but not required.

As a student volunteer you must be an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral student during the 2011-2012 academic year. A valid, dated student identification card or a letter from your university or school must be presented when registering at the conference. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age during the conference. No earlier experience on student volunteering is required but appreciated.
