Student volunteers
Being a student volunteer is a great way for young researchers to get familiar with the current trends in the research and development related to haptic human-computer interaction. In addition, you can establish a network with the most relevant professionals and other students in the field.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BEING A STUDENT VOLUNTEER?
By helping in the practical organization and running of the conference, student volunteers are a salient part in creating an enjoyable conference experience. Student volunteers support the various programs and events hosted at the conference: registration and information desk, helping in panels, paper sessions and workshops, helping with preparation and set-up of equipment when needed, and in general answering people’s questions about practical matters at the venue. Volunteers are expected to work a certain amount of time during the conference but will also be given great opportunities to attend the conference sessions and socialize. No special skills or experience are necessary for most volunteer positions.
BENEFITS OF BEING A STUDENT VOLUNTEER
In return for their help at the conference, you as a student volunteer will receive:
Please be aware that student volunteers are responsible for their travelling expenses to and from Tampere.
REQUIREMENTS
We are expecting you to have a positive and enthusiastic “can-do” attitude as well as some flexibility and creativity in taking care of practical matters. Usually some interesting surprises occur in such events, which therefore require instant handling. Naturally, you should show up to given tasks on time. Finally, we expect you to be a helpful smiling interface to the conference attendees – both on duty or off. We expect every volunteer to commit to a total of about 20 volunteer hours of work at the conference (over 4-5 days). You should preferably arrive the day before the conference begins (Mon June 11th) and stay a few hours after the conference ends (Fri 15th). There will be an orientation to being a SV on Monday, after which some practical preparations have to be taken care of. Attending the orientation is highly recommended! Any hours worked during these periods will count towards the 20-hour total. You should have good communicative skills in English. Some knowledge of Finnish is appreciated but not required. As a student volunteer you must be an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral student during the 2011-2012 academic year. A valid, dated student identification card or a letter from your university or school must be presented when registering at the conference. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age during the conference. No earlier experience on student volunteering is required but appreciated.
APPLYING AS A STUDENT VOLUNTEER
We encourage students from a range of disciplines and nationalities to apply so we can form a diverse and exciting group! Please send your application via e-mail to Thomas Olsson. Feel free to ask for further details from the same! The application should cover at least the following things:
Notifications of acceptance are sent out on April 2nd, 2012. We expect to get more applications than we need, so early application is encouraged. However, we will make a waiting list so do not be discouraged if you apply close to or after the deadline.
