Assisting Employability for Undergraduates

Mark Udall, Margaret Ross
Abstract

The paper discusses the actions that have been undertaken by Southampton Solent University to the help students to prepare for future employability. This was undertaken via a compulsory unit for all computing students, also by encouraging the students to undertake a placement year in industry, following the second year of their course. The undergraduates were helped to identify suitable final year projects including those for clients outside of the UK. These approaches are discussed.

The paper also considers the involvement of students with the various activities of the BCS, the Chartered Institute of IT, and how those can directly and indirectly benefit the future employability of the students.
