Abstract
This paper presents the current state of a work in progress which aims to contribute towards the question of the suitability of an open source process for developing a national Electronic Health Record System. The IOM defines EHR as “The set of components that form the mechanism by which patient records are created, used, stored, and retrieved. A patient record system is usually located within a health care provider setting. It includes people, data, rules and procedures, processing and storage devices (e.g., paper and pen, hardware and software), and communication and support facilities”[1]. Some insights are provided along with some arguments which might indicate that there could be a valid point in this question along with the future directions of this work being presented at the end of the paper.
