Of the timber market for felling some sort of assessment of the standing timber mus be made. Generally there is some advance information available. For planning and harvesting some relatively lightweight method is needed through which to estimate the quantity and structure of standing timber. Possible sampling in the forest or data obtained from comparable stand are used to update the advance information on the standing timber. The estimate based on the log distributions are the basis for crosscutting on the computer before harvesting according to the desired criteria. This produces some idea of the production potential of the standing timber. Predictions can also be updated in the course of harvesting. |
