When the Department was founded, the
teaching staff consisted only of a professor and an assistant.
At present there are 9 teaching positions:
two professors, three lecturers, senior assistant, assistant and two full-time teachers.
There are also a number of research staff on fixed-term contracts.
Also a large number of Statistics part-time
teachers have worked in the Department. These include Tomi Seppälä, Anna-Maija
Koivisto,Ismo Lapinleimu, Henri Toukomaa, Merja Jauhiainen, Markopekka Niinimäki, Joni
Lehtinen, Matti Ylén, Jari Parviainen, Pirjo Palmroos, Inka Martti, Lasse Koskinen, Hannu
Oja, Jani-Pekka Virtanen, Minna Åhman and Erkki Mäkelä.

Simo Puntanen obtained his M.Sc. (1970), Ph.Lic. (1976) and Ph.D. (1987) in Statistics
at the University of Tampere. He held teaching posts at the Department of Mathematical
Sciences from 1967 to 1970; he was an acting lecturer in Statistics 1970–73 and
1974–80, and a senior assistant in 1973–74 and 1980–88. He was
appointed lecturer in 1989, and in 1997–98 he was an Associate Professor at Tampere
University. He also holds a Docentship at the University of Tampere (1988).
Simo Puntanen has been a Senior Fellow at the Academy of Finland (autumn 1988 and
1993–1995), and in 1998–1999 he works as a Senior Scientist of the Academy.
He has made several research visits to McGill University, Montreal and the University
of Auckland, New Zealand.
Research interests:
- Matrix methods in statistics, with particular emphasis on linear statistical models
regression diagnostics matrix inequalities optimality of ordinary least squares,
generalized inverses, and canonical correlations.
- The use of the computers in teaching statistics.
- Statistical data analysis.
- Bibliography in matrix theory for statistics.
