Statistics is one of the three subjects in the
Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Philosophy at the University of Tampere. The
Department is located since 1.8.2001 in the Faculty of Information
Sciences, which is one of the
six faculties of the University. In teaching, each subject is responsible for its own
curriculum. The Department offers extensive basic courses in Statistics both in the Faculty of Information Sciences and in the Faculty of Social
Sciences. The
Department has an extensive programme of teaching. Great emphasis is placed on the
practical application of statistical methods and on the use of computers. Hence Statistics
courses will contain, from the very outset, a practical project calling for active skills
in the use of computers. The Department provides training for a range of higher degrees.
There are the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Statistics (by coursework and dissertation) and
the research degrees of Lic.Phil. and Ph.D. The emphasis on applications can also be seen in the fact that every student majoring in Statistics must have about 20 study weeks' course series in applied subjects in his subject studies, for example Economics, Business Sciences Medical Sciences and Sociology. The use of the computer and the study of computer science are of great importance in the study of Statistics. Most extensively the computer is utilized in the Statistics basic courses in which it is also intensively employed in lecturing. The computer is used both to illustrate theoretical concepts and in data analysis. In later phases students also have to write their own computer programs. A student graduating in Statistics has to take altogether 15 study weeks in Computer Science. Because the theory of Statistics has a mathematical foundation, some quite extensive mathematical courses are included in the Statistics line. The total extent of mathematical studies is 25 study weeks. |
