Story about our game

How we got our idea?

Starting from the last autumn we were told about the yearly game project for first-year business information systems students. The details of the assignment were kept secret until the start of this year when we finally learned about the subject of our upcoming games - nutrient recycling. The topic of the games in our class (19tiko3) was the final production, ie how nutrients are recycled from biowaste, dry toilets, feces and urine. At the start nutrient recycling as a topic sounded challenging and serious but our class managed to have fun with the topic and pretty soon every team started to come up with new ideas for the games.

At the beginning it was hard to come up with entertaining game ideas. We were too serious about it and it took some time to understand what kind of games the customer would want from us. Will we make a game where the goal is to take care of a dry toilet? How about a game where stuff drops from the top of the screen and they have to be sorted to right places? Or what if you have to create a working waste disposal system for a town and avoid contaminating the nearby lake?

We came up with the idea for BioRunner during our first brainstorming session. What would be more addicting than an endless runner game where you collect biowaste in hopes of getting the highest score? We felt that the idea was very simple and frankly we invested a little more in our other two ideas in the hope that one of them would be chosen. To our surprise the customer chose BioRunner and we stick to it. The selection caused a bit of controversy among our team, but in the end, we were happy with the selection.

The idea of the game was clear to us from the beginning and it was easy for us to further develop it. Some changes were made during the production but the basic idea stayed the same. We experienced some complications but we surpassed all of them with finnish sisu and teamwork. We have become good friends during the project and our good team spirit has eased the brainstorming and implementation of different parts of the game.
