While you’re here, you might as well read this text through. Shortly, you will find out what this blog is all about.

My name is Veeti Japola and I study in Tampere University. My master’s program is Sustainable Digital Life. How did I end up here? When I was in high school, I had no clue what I wanted to do when I grow up. Now I am 25 years and I still don’t know what I want to do when I’m an adult, but at least I’ve found something that I’m interested in. My background is in communication studies, which I studied at University of Vaasa. During my bachelor’s degree I realized that something is missing. My minor subject, Philosophy, got me to understand that we shouldn’t take occurrences of the world as given (wow, so deep man :D), but to go towards the underlying causes of phenomena. This being said, I felt as this master’s program could satisfy my academic needs better.

Introductory text of Sustainable Digital Life -program in Tampere University (2021) website goes in the following way:

Sustainable Digital Life programme aims to make the digital life more sustainable and accessible for all by cherishing diversity and combining critical thinking with a creative mindset.

For me, it has been rousing to see how this this aim for cherishing diversity has become concrete in our student community. We all come from different academic – and also cultural – backgrounds. I’ve found it very fascinating to see how different people have different ways to approach some matter. I feel as the learning experience happens in two parts. First, you learn some facts of some phenomenon. This phase is quite one-dimensional. In the second part, however, you learn from your peers, when they’re explaining their approach to this same phenomenon. Metaphorically this refines that understanding – which once was unidimensional – to 3D shape. So as result, we get an understanding that is more integrity and probably more truthful.

In the future, I’ll blog about my project which is Ethical challenges in Digitality. The project is carried out in collaboration with Finnish broadcasting company YLE. I don’t know yet what kind of blog posts I’ll write in the future, but I have an infallible sense of quality so it should be something worthy of reading*.

*❕ This claim is disputed by Tampere University

List of references:

Tampere Univeristy.
